Grotte del Bussento nature reserve is a canyon covered with flourishing vegetation.
Visits start from Morigerati historic town center and take the visitor along a trail which leads down to the stream and mill; from the ancient mill visitors follow the path that runs along the stream to reach the cave. Here visitors will have the opportunity to observe the resurgence of the karst river Bussento.

About Grotte del Bussento Oasis

The nature reserve is inside Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, listed in the Global Geopark Network. Morigerati Oasis is a “main” geosite due to the karst phenomenon and it is characterised by an hypogeal river, gorges and river valley. It covers a surface of 607 hectares.
The gorge floor is dominated by moss and ferns and by alder and willow shrubs. High on the north-west woods are composed by holm oaks, downy oaks,  ashes, hornbeams, while on the opposite side it a vigorous Mediterranean maquis dominates the mountain slope.
Trouts, freshwater crayfishes and freshwater crabs find a suitable habitat in the fresh water of the river; the otter is a rare visitor to the area.  Other elusive mammals living in the woodland include the porcupine, the wild cat and the wolf. Birds of prey include kestrels, northern goshawks, black kites, red kites, and the impressive common raven.
Facilities include a Visitor Center, a nature path, a resting-area and an ancient mill.

Visiting Grotte del Bussento nature reserve

From Morigerati town center an easy path permits visitors to reach (in approximately half an hour) the cave and the river Bussento resurgence. Walking alongside the Bussentino stream, visitors can appreciate a partially shadowy environment with cooler temperatures. An easy staircase illuminated by sunlight gives access to the cave. It is possible to enter the cave for a few dozen meters only with proper shoes and torchlight (there is no artificial illumination). Torchlights may be borrowed at the visitor center.
After the cave tour it is possible to return to the mill and to continue the visit in direction of Sicilì, a small town on the opposite side. A path leads up to the town.
