About Padule di BolgheriWith its farmland and wild fields, wet meadows, narrow-leaved ash flooded woodlands, ponds, coastal tombolo and stretch of sand it is a rare sample of what was once the Tuscan coast. The protected area covers an area of 513 hectares.
Flora and FaunaAmong the plants there are the narrow-leaved ash, Western prickly juniper, Phoenician juniper, African salt cedar, blackthorn, common hawthorn, downy oak, holm oak, stone pine, common reed, tule, rushes, althea, sea daffodil and sea holly.
The bird population in winter include the Mallard duck, Eurasian wigeon, northern shoveler, northern pintails, gadwall and common teals. Stable populations of grayleg geese, northern lapwings, cranes, stock pigeons, common snipes, Eurasian bitterns, cattle egret, great egret, long-eared owls, Western marsh harriers, white-tailed eagles and many common wood pigeons are found in the reserve premises.
During spring it is possible to observe black-tailed godwits, ruffs, common redshanks, Greenshanks, spotted redshanks and black-winged (or common) Stilts. Among the heron populations the purple heron, little bittern and little egret. Passerine species include sand martins, swallows and common redstarts.
Breeders include the little grebe, xblack-winged stilt, coot, water ails, twny owl, lesser-spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, Eurasian wrynecks, common cuckoos, short-toed treecreeper, Eurasian sparrohawks, golden oriole, European roller, reed warblers, great reed warblers and the European penduline tit.
Exceptional the successful breeding of a pair of white stork. The species returned after a gap of 200 years.
The mammals include wild boar, deer, roe deer, European rabbit, hare, porcupine, badger, least weasel, beech marten, red fox, common dormouse, hedgehog and squirrel.
Among reptiles the European pond terrapin , green whip snake, four-lined snake, viper, grass snake and Western green lizard. There are sightings of the loggerhead sea turtle in the sea stretch opposite to the nature reserve. Among the fish species the European eel, common carp and Gambusia. Amphibians include the great crested newt, smooth newt, edible frog and pool frog.
FacilitiesThe reserve is jointly managed by WWF Italy and the landowner Incisa della Rocchetta. Among the founders of WWF Italy the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta served as president of the organisation. By his will in 1959 the Oasi of Bolgheri became the first private nature reserve in Italy. In 1968 it became a WWF Oasis.
A visitor centre, two observation towers, six observation huts, and a nature path for schools with two observation huts are present in the reserve.

Visiting days: Saturday and Sunday at 9 am to 2 pm;
For schools and groups visits are on Tuesday. Booking required.
